Skills and abilities
Selected achievements: I have attained a 120 hour TEFL qualification, including face to face classroom elements. I hold an assistant fitness instructor qualification; scored highest in the class. During university, I was involved with various extra curriculum activities to enhance employability and career management; for example, I attended a leadership course, in which I came first. I was also elected as a student representative; this involved organising charity events, student-staff feedback, course quality meetings and guest lectures.
Teaching skills: I have been involved in teaching for around two years so far. Having students depend on me has developed my problem solving abilities, flexibility and creativity. Working as a teacher has also allowed me to exercise skills such as providing feedback, behavioural management and confidence building. I wish to be able to utilize and develop my teaching skills by facing a new challenge.
People skills: Appropriately dealing with spontaneous problems presented by students is an important skill developed through my teaching experience. Each student also presents unique specific issues that teachers need to deal with. In these situations it is important to be professional, understanding and apply the experience that can only be acquired through teaching experience.
Organisational: As a teacher, my students have expected me to be organised and prepared. In my third year I had to deal with multiple deadlines on the same day as well as working on my dissertation and other pursuits. By remaining flexible I was able to adapt my time management and improve my organisational skills. Throughout my university career I never requested an extension and I have passed all assessments.
Communication: Working in schools in Shanghai with rather poor English ability even among the teachers has honed my ability to communicate effectively. After being elected as a student representative my primary role was to facilitate communication between the department and the students; I used a number of methods to do this including emails requesting student feedback, creating social webpages for students and organising face-to-face meetings with staff. This developed my organisational and interpersonal skills. I also volunteered for the Career Ahead budget committee, which was responsible for making decisions on what activities to pursue that would benefit the participants of the programme.
Teamwork: Being the homeroom teacher in a for a kindergarten class requires me to work effectively with my Chinese co-teacher and a nurse teacher, also parents are actively involved in the group often attending trips, talking before class, contacting me on social media and attending meetings. I completed a leadership course conducted by the MoD. This involved working on teambuilding exercises with a group of strangers. My team completed the most challenges in the fastest time and was named the most successful group. This opportunity exercised my ability to work in a team, manage groups and solve problems whilst under pressure in the face of distractions.
